About the program:
Provides financial assistance for education to assist with vocational training for the surviving spouse of the deceased, retired or active duty service member. The amount of the loan is based on need. Aid is also available for the training of dependent handicapped children. Guaranteed student loans are offered to the dependent children of Navy and Marine Corps members to assist them in financing their post-secondary education. Students may borrow up to $3000 per year. Financial Assistance for Basic Maintenance--Interest free loans and grants are available primarily to cover basic need pending receipt of government benefits, or for some special non-recurring need. Financial assistance is available for actual funeral expenses, and for related expenses. Financial counseling is available through volunteer interviewers or members of the professional staff. Navy Relief Society Thrift Shops provide an outlet through which serviceable articles no longer needed in one family may be used in another Navy family at minimal cost. Financial assistance for emergency travel is available if there is an illness or death of immediate family members, transportation is available. Temporary assistance for emergency, non-recurring health medical services not covered through other government programs.
