About the program:
Provides a department of the executive branch, local government and is responsible for law enforcement through duties of prosecuting all criminal violations of state law. SERVICES PROVIDED: The York-Poquoson Commonwealth's Attorney is an elected, constitutional, law enforcement official, independent in his duties from the county, city and state. His duties, responsibilities and privileges are set out in the state constitution and the code of Virginia 1950, as amended. His main duties include the prosecution of criminal violations of state law. The governing body of York County having created the Office of County Attorney and having appointed an attorney to fill that office, the Commonwealth's Attorney has been relieved of his duties to represent the county in civil matters. The governing body of the City of Poquoson having also created the Office of City Attorney and having appointed an attorney to fill that office, the Commonwealth's Attorney has correspondingly no further duty to represent Poquoson in civil matters.
