About the program:
Provides a residential and day school operated by the state government for deaf, blind, and deaf/blind multi-disabled ages 2-21. ELIGIBILITY: Medical diagnosis as a qualifying factor-hearing or visual impairment, or multi-disabled with hearing or visual impairment. Agency is available to all blind and deaf students living east of Interstate 95 and grades K-12. The agency also provides and educational training program for deaf and blind multi-disalbed children statewide. FEES: Local education agencies pay according to their own per capita cost. There is an activities fee for patticipants of a stipulated recreational activities program, applicable to all educaiton levels. Accident insurance coverage is available at a minimal cost. SERVICES PROVIDED: The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind at Hampton provides a day program for preschool deaf, blind, and deaf or blind multihandicapped children ages 2 to 5 years old. The remaining school programs are for residential or day students 6 to 21 years old. Other agency services include vision screening and audiology testing for all students once a year. The school also provides ages 14 and up with vocational assessments and work orientation through various programs. Agency conducts Braille instruction classes and has a monthly mailing list with a calendar of events. The school acts a general resource agency for the blind and the deaf. OTHER COMMENTS: Accident insurance is mandaory for all residents.
