About the program:
Links volunteers with developmentally delayed/physically handicapped/mentally retarded children in institutions or day care facilities. Matches low income elderly volunteers
with children who have special needs in non-profit institutions for the mentally retared, physically handicapped, and day care centers.
ELIGIBILITY: In order to be a foster grandparent, one must be 60 years of age or older, have limited income, and be in reasonably good health so as to be able to work 4 hours 5
days per week. In order to receive the service of a foster grandparent, the individual must be in a non-profit institution for the mentally retarded or physically handicapped,
or in a day care center, or facilities such as shelters, juvenile detention centers, etc. Any non-profit setting can receive the services of the foster grandparents if such
setting serves children with special or exceptional needs.
SERVICES PROVIDED: The foster grandparent works with children as volunteers. They receive a stipend of $2.45 per hour to supplement their income. By participating in the FGP
volunteers have enhanced self esteem and serve the community. Transportation assistance is provided when available.
