About the program:
Provides a variety of services to individuals who are at-risk, have a disability and/or activity restrictions. Services range from enrollment in therapy based and/or skill
development programs, activity adaptations in general recreation programs to identification of available community resources.
PROGRAMS HELD In VIRGINIA BEACH PUBLIC SCHOOLS-
Elementary After School Activity Center- the program for ages 5-12 is held in the gym in conjunction with KIDSQUEST Program and includes crafts, small and large group
games;must be able to follow 2-step directions,requires minimal daily living assistance.
Middle School After School Program- the program for ages 13-16 is held in the gym in conjunction with Middle School Mania, requiring the ability to make simple choices, follow
2-step directions, and handle daily living activities with minimal assistance.
Summer Youth Day Camps- program for ages 6-12 provides social interaction; program serves the profoundly disabled up to age 21.
Middle School Summer Camp- program for ages 13-16 offers social interaction in smal and large groups and reinforces skill development.
RECREATION PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS-
Buncha, Buncha Fun- program fordisabled children ages 3-5 include art, music and group games.
More Fun- program for ages 6-12 is for disabled children and their siblings and includes music,art,simple cooking and group games.
Explore the Great Outdoors- program for disabled children and teens 8-16 offering participation in day camping and instruction in camping activities.
Mini-Venturers- program for disabled children and teens 8-16 and their siblings and they participate together on field trips.
Families Play To Grow- families play together.
T.G.I.F.- program for the disabled person 20 and up provides socialization in a supervised setting.
Aventure Club- program offering field trips for the disabled person 20 and over.
SKILL DEVELOPMENT CLASSES-
Tots and More- program for ages 3-5 offers social interaction and development of fine and gross motor skills.
Learn to Swim Program- ages 1 and up in accordance with Red Cross standards.
Water Exercise- ages 16 and up offering aquatic exercise program.
Aquatic Therapy- provides 1 on 1 instruction to improve physical, emotional,and mental function of individuals suffering from stroke, cardiovascular ailments, or other painful
injuries.
Level I-
Hobby Hour- age 13 and up designed to introduce lifetime leisure skills in arts and crafts, fitness and sports.
Teen Canteen (summer Day Program)- age 13-21 offers structured activities to facilitate social interaction and reinforce skill development and participation in group setting.
Level II
Adult Recreation- age 21 and up provides leisure skills education program in recreation center offering opportunities to develop necessary skills to participate in Gateway to
Recreation program.
Teen Recreation Club- age 13-20 focusing on the Leisure Skills education program in the center to develop opportunities to participate in the Gateway to Recreation program.
New Horizons- Summer day program for ages 17 and up integrating individuals into the rec center activities.
Level III
Gateway to Recreation- age 13 and up providing participants the opportunity to learn necessary skills to participate in the most least restrictive environment as possible.
New Ventures- Summer Day Program for ages 15 and up which incorporates leisure education and community volunteer service.
WHEELCHAIR SPORTS-
Basketball- ages 16 and up, offering recreational and competitive opportunities. Conference, non-conference, and exhibition games are scheduled September through March.
Beginner Tennis- ages 10 and up providing an opportunity for physically challenged youth, teens and adults to be introduced to wheelchair tennis and learn the basic skills and
techniques.
Sports Extravaganza- age 8-15 provides an introduction to a variety of wheelchair sports and activities, offering instruction in basic rules, the use of equipment and adaptive
techniques for a variety of sports.
INTERAGENCY/COLLABORATION with COMMUNITY PROGRAMS-
Pendleton- age 6-12, program provides children at the center with opportunity to participate in recreational activities including group games, team sports, crafts, cooking and
challege games.
MAC Unit- age 5-17, is a self contained unit which travels the City of Virginia Beach providing free of charge recreational activities to targeted neighborhoods.
