About the program:
Provides a supplemental food program administered by the Health Department to help pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers, post-partum women, and children up to 5 years of age
improve the quality of their diet by offering nutrition education, as well as supplemental foods. Drafts, which are valid only for the purchase of certain foods, are issued to
the clients. The prescribed foods are those which are good sources of protein, minerals, especially iron and calcium, and vitamin C. For women and children, the food package
consists of milk allowance in form of evaporated milk, cheese, non-fat dry milk, or whole, skim low-fat milk, frozen or canned juice, eggs, cereal, peanut butter or beans.
Agency offers health and nutrition counseling also, and non-related nutritional problems are referred to appropriate agencies during participation in the program. Medical or
nutrition assessment for re-certification will be made in 6 month intervals after entrance into the program. Pregnant women shall be certified for duration of their pregnancy
and for 6 weeks postpartum, or 6 months postpartum, if breastfeeding, client is eligible to stay on program for 1 year from date of infant's birth.
